Morozevich - Sokolov 1-0 Sarajevo 1999

I like this game very much. It's impressive to see that Morozevich starts his first super-tournament with a very nice win. Thanks to GM Serguei Shipov and Club Kasparov for their live commentry which you can see here.

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 6. Bb5+ Bd7

  • In response to Alexander's unexpected opening, Ivan steps off the main route. Since prehistoric times chess players usually played
    6... c6
7. Qe2 Bd6 8. Nc3 O-O 9. Bxd7 Qxd7 10. a3 Alex wants to capture the a5- Knight.
  • It was also possible to play
    10. O-O c6! 11. dxc6 Nxc6 where Black has a good counter game in Sulskis S. - Beliavsky, Koszalin, 1998.
10... b6 11. d3 It looks as if White has strengthened the line. For the moment he has got an extra pawn and the Black Knight on the a5-square is out of the game.
11... c6 12. b4 Nb7 13. dxc6 Qxc6 14. Nce4 Nd7 15. Qf3 Be7

16. Nxh7 16... Rfc8 17. Nhg5 f6 18. Nh3 Qxc2 19. O-O Nd8 White has an extra pawn, but how does he revive the h3-Knight?
20. Be3 Qc6 21. d4 Perfect! Now the White Knight will be able to enter the game after any pawn exchange. White has undoubtedly got a serious advantage.
21... Nf7 22. Rad1 Nf8 23. Qg4 Qe6 24. Qxe6 Nxe6 25. d5 Sasha does not like simple decisions. And the exchange on e5 has fixed the White's advantage.
25... Nf8 26. d6 Bd8 27. g4 Rc4 28. f3 g6 29. Kh1 Rac8 30. Nhf2 He did it!
30... Nd7 The fact that Morozevich can realize an extra pawn in the ending is not a boring routine but a real thriller!
31. Rg1 Kf8 32. Rg3 Rc2 33. h4 Re2 34. Bd2 f5 35. gxf5 Bxh4 36. Rh3 Bxf2 37. fxg6 Rxd2 38. Nxd2 Nxd6 39. Ne4 Nxe4 40. Rh8+ Kg7 41. Rxc8 When the smoke dispersed, it turned out that Black had no warriors left.
1-0
